Always Close, Always Safe

A study released by the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Science in May 2011 is capturing lots of attention by stating toxic flame retardant chemicals exist in over 100 baby products in the US, the incidence being especially high in foam crib mattresses and changing pads. The study states infants are particularly vulnerable to chemical exposure because babies so spend much of their time next to foam products.

An infant will spend up to 70% of his or her time on the crib mattress, a toddler up to 50%. All Stokke mattresses are free of harmful chemicals including toxic flame retardants; our mattress options include organic selections with lamb’s wool or coir stuffing. Coir is created from coconut husks which are covered in organic and natural latex to make a supportive and breathable fibrous layer. Our foam mattresses are made by Colgate in the U.S. and utilize only hypo-allergenic foam with certifications from Greenguard for its low chemical emissions.

In addition to being 100% organic cotton, all Stokke bedding is OEKO-TEX certified: the highest standards of testing is deployed throughout the manufacturing and delivery process to ensure there is no contact with harmful substances or known health hazards. In fact, for textiles known to come in contact with the skin, OEKO-TEX certification means the most stringent measurements were applied during its extensive testing process to fulfill completely safe contact with humans.

The design of our furniture is consistent with our commitment to providing products which are not only long lasting but safe. Our Nursery furniture includes a lacquer finish which is 100% free from formaldehyde. All our furniture is made from 100% cultivated beech wood, its emission is very low, since by nature beech wood is a very clean wood fiber.

Other needed components used in the construction of our cribs include

• Glue: contained in the laminates and plywood parts of the crib – our crib complies with E1 and there is continuous measurement in our factory to insure the emission is low. The testing method EN 717-2 stipulates 3,5 mg/m2h, Our measurements show a lower level of 1,2 mg/m2h.

• Plywood : we ensure our plywood provider complies with CARB regulations Phase 2 of 0.08 ppm (parts per million)

Stokke’s commitment in the best interest of the child includes every effort to use the highest quality materials, and create a safe environment for your child.

New Crib Standards

New Federal requirements were enacted in June 2011 to improve overall crib safety.

Our Stokke Sleepi crib meets or exceeds all CPSC mandates for crib construction.

Our cribs have always had fixed railings since the inception of the Sleepi design almost a decade ago.

Sleepi is constructed of sturdy solid Beechwood, a hardwood with strength attributes similar to Oak.

New Sleepi crib hardware contains self locking screws which prevents parts from coming loose.

Our mattress support is made from the same durable materials as the rest of the crib.

Sleepi conforms with 16CFR 1219 which is the new standard and our crib was re-tested to insure this.

Minimal Materials Achieve Maximum Strength

June 13, 2011 · Posted in Eco Friendly · Comment

High chairs though not always top of mind during the baby registry process will become top of mind within your new baby’s first six months as s/he begins to eat solid foods. The array of choices for a high chair are staggering though most are plastic, occupy lots of space, are single use and one size fits all [babies].

Stokke’s Tripp Trapp® offers an eco-friendly alternative to parents seeking a safe, practical solution that actually adjusts to your child’s growing body. All with a minimal footprint both for space and materials used.

Tripp Trapp is crafted from 100% solid Beech wood. Tripp Trapp is cultivated from Beech trees which are indigenous and abundant in Norway on south all the way to the Balkans. These natural environs are pesticide free and the trees used to make Tripp Trapp are cultivated – meaning forestry experts manage the natural regeneration of Beech wood trees insuring a mix of trees at every age in the life cycle of the forest. Stokke manages this through seed cultivation in greenhouses which are then re-planted in the forest.

Ensuring high quality starts with the forest floor, as Foresters thin out branches to maximize both the strength of the wood and create more light for optimal accelerated growing conditions. Beech wood has high strength properties similar to Oak, is clean with a faint wood smell and is ideally suited for furniture production.

Stokke makes every attempt to reduce its carbon footprint by sourcing from forests close to the factories which produce this high quality furniture in Poland and Slovenia. Stokke stands by its promise of quality with an unprecedented 7 year warranty for Tripp Trapp®. There are over 7 million Tripp Trapps in circulation since 1972 around the planet which speaks volumes to the longevity of a chair.
